How Long Is Enough? Manila Airport Connection Time & Minimum Layovers Explained

Kamusta, my dear travellers!

Your flight from London has finally landed in Manila. You have spent hours travelling across the world, collected your passport and are looking forward to reaching your next destination. Perhaps Cebu is your next destination, or maybe it’s going to Davao or to the beautiful beaches of Palawan.

However, there is one important question to consider, how much time will you have before your next flight?

When making your reservation, a two-hour layover might seem to be a comfortable time. But at Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA), the waiting time in between flights can slip by fast, especially if you must pass through immigration, pick up your bags, change terminals and head back to your waiting area and check in again.

So How much connection time do you need at Manila Airport? How many hours would be a better time at the airport if you went to Manilla airport?

This will depend on your start and end city, what airline you are flying with, baggage handling plans, and whether you are travelling with checked baggage. This guide will inform you of what to expect and what to plan to make the connection smoother through Manila.

How Much Connection Time Do You Need at Manila Airport?

It’s important to note that there is not a single minimum connecting time for every passenger at NAIA. The length of the connecting flight between two domestic services is very different from arriving international and transferring to a domestic service in another terminal.

As a practical planning guide, consider the following time allowances:

Connecting flightSuggested time to allow
Domestic to domestic, same terminal2 hours
Domestic to domestic, different terminals3 hours
International to domestic, same terminal3 hours
International to domestic, different terminals4–5 hours
Domestic to international, same terminal3 hours
Domestic to international, different terminals4 hours
Separate tickets with baggage collection and recheck4–5 hours or more

The following buffers are suggested, not official NAIA minimum connecting time or guaranteed safe connections. The published connection rules and check-in times of your airline are always the priority.

Cebu Pacific for instance suggests that if you are to connect to another flight with security and immigration screening, you should give yourself at least 3 hours between flights. Japan Airlines also recommends the transfer between terminals to be more than 180 minutes.

When travelling separately on tickets or needing to change terminals or have checked-in bags, it is wise to leave extra time.

Why Does Manila Airport Need Additional Connection Time?

The Philippines has an international gateway in Manila Airport. Unlike other major airports in the world, however, its passenger terminals are not located in a single, large terminal, but in various buildings.

This could involve exiting one building, going to the airport roads and re-entering another terminal before making your way to the next location.

Several airport procedures are also to be considered.

1. Immigration checks

Those who land in the Philippines from another country and will be heading to an internal destination will have to go through the required entry requirements for the Philippines.

Generally, you will have to:

  • Present your passport and complete immigration checks.
  • Follow the applicable eTravel requirements.
  • Collect your checked baggage where required.
  • Proceed through customs.
  • Continue to your domestic departure arrangements.

Immigration queues can become longer when several international flights arrive around the same time.

2. Collecting and checking in your luggage

Don’t assume that your luggage automatically gets checked straight through to your destination.

Those who are arriving from an overseas flight might be required to pick up their bags, go through customs and complete the airline transfer or baggage drop-off.

When you have separate tickets, you will most likely have to pick up your bags and re-check them in for the next flight.

Please always check with your operating airline before travelling.

3. Moving between terminals

If you are flying into the country and out of the country from different terminals, you’ll need to make time for transferring between them.

NAIA offers inter terminal shuttle service. But, waiting for the shuttle and travelling between terminals, between the buses and finding the right pick up spot can make for a lengthy trip.

4. check-in and security at your next terminal

Once you have arrived at your next terminal, you will need to still check in, drop off your luggage, go through security and walk to your boarding gate.

Keep in mind airline check-in and baggage drop-off counters shut down prior to departure. Arriving at the terminal just before the flight does not imply you are able to board the flight.

Is 2 Hours Enough at Manila Airport?

One of the most vital inquiries to think about when taking a domestic connection in the Philippines is this.

In most international to domestic scenarios, two hours is generally not enough time.

It may feel like a long amount of time on a booking site, however there are several steps that can take longer than anticipated. Now, let’s think of two scenarios.

Scenario 1: International arrival to domestic departure

Suppose you are coming from London to NAIA Terminal 1 and flying from Terminal 2 to Cebu.

Immigration, pick up checked luggage, customs, Terminal 2, check-in (if necessary) and pass-through security. With two hours to spare between arriving on the plane and boarding, even if you arrive at the correct time on the international leg.

Scenario 2: Domestic arrival on another domestic flight

Now suppose that you have been flying from Cebu to Manila and then from Manila to another city or town within the Philippines.

When the two flights are booked together, at the same terminal, and it is arranged by the airline, the transfer can be much easier. In case of pickup and/or transfer to another terminal, however, more time will be required.

So, is 2 hours adequate at Manila Airport? This will depend on the connection, but I would not recommend relying on a two-hour connection for an international arrival followed by a domestic flight, particularly if you need to collect your baggage or change terminals.

International to Domestic Connection at NAIA: What Should You Expect?

A lot of those who travel from the UK to the Philippines don’t make it to Manila. They can travel onward to Cebu, Davao, Iloilo, Puerto Princesa or elsewhere within the country.

That’s where planning is especially crucial.

If you are flying from London to Manila and then from Manila to Cebu, you should try to get one ticket to cover both leg of your trip. If you are flying from London to Manila and then from Manila to Cebu you should look for a combined ticket.

The airport transfer could involve:

Step 1: Arrive at Manila Airport

Once you have landed, follow the signs for immigration. Have documentary paperwork and a passport on hand for arrival.

Step 2: Complete immigration

Show your passports and obey immigration officers’ instructions. The time needed will be determined by the number of passengers and queue length.

Step 3: Pick up your checked luggage

Go to the baggage area and pick up your suitcases. If your airline has a particular transfer procedure, follow the directions.

Step 4: Clear customs

Ensure you pass through the correct customs and adhere to any customs instructions given.

Step 5: Connect to your home terminal

Before leaving the arrivals hall, check your next flight’s departure terminal. Please use official airport shuttle or other authorised transportation if needed.

Step 6: Check-in for domestic flight

When travelling with separate tickets, you will typically have to re-check in and return your bag before the airline’s deadline.

Step 7: Go through security

Check and then go to your departure gate.

As you can see, a connection is more than just walking from aircraft to aircraft. This is why it makes sense to allow 4-5 hours to make it from an international to a domestic terminal, especially if you are booking the two flights separately. If you get the naia connection time international to domestic right, you will avert needless tension.

How Much Time Do You Need Between NAIA Terminals?

Your travel experience gets more complicated when you’re on a flight of differing terminals.

The correct terminal is based on the type of airline and flight. Even before travelling, always check your booking confirmation (and the latest airport information) to find out how much time is required for naia minimum connecting time.

As a general guide, the airline terminal information published by Japan Airlines in April 2026 lists the following arrangements:

TerminalExamples of airlines and flights
Terminal 1Philippine Airlines international flights, AirAsia and several international carriers
Terminal 2Philippine Airlines domestic flights, PAL Express, CebGo and selected domestic services
Terminal 3Cebu Pacific and several international airlines

The following are examples and not an exhaustive or final list of airlines. Assignments may change, please refer to the latest information for your flight.

Shuttle services are available for connecting passengers between terminals when needed at NAIA. Travel time is variable due to waiting time, traffic and shuttle operations.

Please also consult our NAIA Terminal Transfer Guide which explains how to get from the buildings of the airport.

What If You Have Separate Flight Tickets?

It is a factor that should be considered by anyone who is travelling.

Assume that you book your international ticket from London to Manila with one airline and your domestic ticket from Manila to Boracay with another airline.

If both flights are booked online, but it looks like they are different flights, they could be. This can be a huge amount of difference.

With separate tickets:

  • You may need to collect your checked baggage.
  • You may need to complete a new check-in.
  • You could have to change terminals.
  • Your second airline may not protect you if your first flight is delayed.
  • You may need to purchase a replacement ticket if you miss the onward departure.

For instance, arriving at an international airport 90 minutes late to your connection time, before even picking up your luggage.

That is why at NAIA it is advisable to leave at least four to five hours for an international to domestic terminal connection. If your bags are heavy or you must check them in, or it’s a busy time of year, then more time might be needed.

If it will cost too much not to change planes, investigate longer layovers or an overnight stay in Manila.

What If Your Flights are on the Same Booking?

When travelling on one booking, you will find it easier to connect through Manila.

If your initial flight is delayed, your airline might be able to give you both boarding passes, help arrange for luggage to be taken care of and aid.

But that doesn’t mean to say that you can avoid all the airport processes.

According to Cebu Pacific Guidelines for Connecting Flights, when passengers arrive internationally and are coming from another domestic flight, they will need to get their bags and pass through the customs station and the transfer desk of the airline.

This will depend on your airline and itinerary.

Before travelling, ask:

  • Will I receive both boarding passes at my departure airport?
  • Do I need to collect my checked baggage in Manila?
  • Is my baggage transferred after customs?
  • Do I need to change terminals?
  • What happens if my first flight is delayed?

Getting these answers before leaving home can save considerable stress at the airport.

How Long Should You Allow for Different Manila Layovers?

Here is a list of some practical examples that will help you with planning.

1. Two hour layover in Manila

For a simple, airline-scheduled domestic connection in the same terminal, a two-hour connection can possibly be achieved. It is a narrow buffer, though, and is subject to the connection rules of the airline.

I don’t think it might be suitable for an overseas arrival and then a domestic flight.

2. Three hours layover in Manila.

Three hours provides a bit more time but can still be cramped if you arrive from abroad, pick up your bag and switch terminals.

Cebu Pacific recommends a connection of at least three hours when there are security and immigration checks. This is not to say that all NAIA connections will be successful, but rather that it is her typical recommendation.

3. Four-hour layover in Manila

Some international-to-domestic transfers start at 4 hours, which can be more comfortable depending on the situation, such as having to change terminals.

Even though individual tickets have been issued, it is still risky because of long immigration lines and delayed baggage.

4. Manila layover for five hours.

Many international-to-domestic flights have five hours of extra time.

It provides extra time for arriving formalities, picking up your bags, changing terminals and checking in again. This extra time can be especially helpful when you’re travelling with the kids, elderly family members or several bags.

5. An overnight Manila layover

If you are traveling internationally at nighttime and your local flight is early in the morning, you might want to consider an overnight stay. Stay over near the airport, sleep after a long flight and head back to the airport with extra time.

This might be a good option if your next flight is on another ticket or you don’t want to miss it.

What Can Cause Delays During a Manila Airport Connection?

A well-coordinated connection can be tricky if unexpected delays happen during a manila layover domestic flight.

These are some factors to keep in mind:

  • International flight delays: Weather, air traffic and operational issues can cause delays to your arrival date.
  • Larger immigration lines: Longer waits at immigration can be caused by several flights arriving at once.
  • Baggage delays: Baggage might take longer to reach the baggage reclaim area.
  • Airport traffic: Road congestion – traffic may be affected between the airport terminals.
  • The time it takes to get to the airport: There may be a waiting time for the next available airport transfer service.
  • Check-in/ Baggage drop-off times: Airlines close check-in and baggage drop-off before scheduled departure.
  • Busy travel seasons: Holidays, weekends and busy travel seasons may increase the number of passengers at the airport.

The most effective way to get ready is to allow sufficient time for these contingencies and not to organize connection around everything going smoothly.

Tips for Booking a Domestic Connection from the UK

When preparing for a trip from the UK to the Philippines, a bit of research before you book can make your trip easier. Understanding how much time to allow for a Manila Airport layover can help you plan a smoother journey.

These are some tips that will help you.

  • Check your arrival and departure terminals: Do not assume your international and domestic flights use the same terminal.
  • Compare flights on 1 booking: When possible, seek an airline-scheduled connecting flight.
  • Avoid very short self-transfers: Allow more time if you have separate tickets.
  • Check your baggage arrangements: Find out whether you need to collect and recheck your luggage in Manila.
  • Know the check-in times: Your home airline might close check-in counters long before the flight.
  • Keep essential documents accessible: Have your passport, flight details, boarding passes and required arrival documents ready.
  • Consider an overnight stop: If your arrival and onward flight times are too close, a hotel stay can be a more comfortable choice.
  • Check your flight status: Monitor both flights before leaving the UK and while travelling.

When Should You Book an Overnight Stay in Manila?

Not all the time, the shortest is the best connection.

After your long international flight, you may not want to rush through immigration, getting your luggage and another check-in.

Consider an overnight stay when:

  • Your international flight arrives late at night.
  • Your domestic flight leaves early the following morning.
  • You have booked your flights separately.
  • Your onward flight departs from another terminal.
  • You have young children or elderly family members with you.
  • Missing your domestic flight would cause a major problem with your holiday plans.

Choose accommodation with convenient airport access and check how you will travel back to your departure terminal.

Plenty of rest will make the remainder of your trip to the Philippines a lot more enjoyable.

Final Thoughts: Give Yourself Enough Time at Manila Airport

Don’t let a connection via Manila get you stressed out. The key to this is knowing how the airport operates and leaving sufficient time for each stage of your trip.

If it is a simple domestic connection, two hours might be okay in certain conditions. But more careful planning is necessary when international arrivals, separate tickets, and baggage collection and changing terminals occur.

If you’re moving from the UK to another spot in the Philippines, I would probably try to get at least 4-5 hours when booking separate tickets, as that’s the minimum amount of time allowed when switching planes in the UK. If you have a particularly complex connection, opt for a night’s stay instead.

Please remember to read your airline’s connection guidelines, luggage and terminal information before booking.
