The Historical Heartbeat (The Must-Explore Trio)

This trio is where Old Manila’s heart lives. These streets have witnessed centuries of history; from Spanish galleons to WWII turbulence, each layer is etched in time. No compromises on these experiences. Is Manila worth visiting? Absolutely, and this trio is the proof.

Intramuros – The Walled City

• My Unique Angle: Experience a Bamboo Bike Tour. Avoid the casual, leisurely horse-drawn carriages! The coolest way to see the sights is to go on a Bambike Ecotour. You will pedal a bicycle made of bamboo and ride past ruins with a local guide who will make the history come to life. Discovering these historical Manila tourist attractions is a real treat.
• The Can’t-Miss: Fort Santiago. This was, and is, the most important site in the Walled City. It was a headquarters, barracks, and prison. Place yourself in the shoes of national hero Dr José Rizal, who was imprisoned here before his execution. It’s got a heavy feeling of history and deserves a few moments of silence. 
• The Architectural Treasure: San Agustin Church. This church is a survivor. It is the only building in Intramuros that survived the horrific Battle of Manila in 1945. Its decorated interior is stunning! 
  

Binondo – The Oldest Chinatown in the World

Binondo is located just across the Pasig River from Intramuros and was established in 1594, making it the oldest Chinatown in the world! This neighbourhood is full of vibrant energy, delicious food, and a sensory clash of cultures, and it’s not about quiet monuments. Is Manila worth visiting for food alone? Yes, and Binondo is where you’ll find the best of Filipino-Chinese cuisine.

• My Unique Angle: The Food Crawl. This is the ONLY way to visit Binondo. Either hire a guide or create your own crawl, but you will want to sample Filipino-Chinese dishes that have been around for generations. This is one of the essential things to do in Manila.
• Traveller’s Dish-List: You have to try the Fried Siopao (pan-fried steamed buns), freshly-made Lumpia (vegetable spring rolls), and Hopìa- which is flaky pastry filled with bean paste – from a bakery that has been around for 100 years. The National Museum Complex – Discover Art and History

A visit is a must and an essential experience to connect with Filipino identity. Best of all? Entrance is usually free! The complex occupies three grand neoclassical buildings next to Rizal Park. • The Masterpiece: Move to the National Museum of Fine Arts to find The Spoliarium by Juan Luna, the towering and award-winning national treasure. No other painting encapsulates the struggle and spirit of the country like this.
• The Journey of Culture: Proceed to the Museum of Anthropology to see indigenous culture, and the superb Museum of Natural History to see the diversity of the Philippines. While Manila isn’t known for them, there are no Manila beaches in the city centre, but the cultural sites more than make up for it.

Manila is a multi-city metro area, and its modern area provides a distinct visceral contrast to the colonial centre. This is the contemporary pulse.

Bonifacio Global City (BGC) – The Futuristic Manila

BGC (“The Fort”) is the opposite of old Manila. It’s a master-planned, pristine district filled with shiny skyscrapers, fine dining, and open spaces. This is modern Philippine living, defined.

• My Unique Angle: Outdoor Art Gallery. BGC is a public outdoor gallery. An afternoon walk along the vast boulevards (specifically Bonifacio High Street) will unveil just a few of the dozens of massive and colourful murals and street art installations. They also make for great photography. These modern Manila tourist attractions offer a great contrast to Intramuros.
• Fun Detour: The Mind Museum is a fabulous and fun stop if you need a decidedly high-quality, interactive learning opportunity. It is world-class.
  

The Grand Sunset Spectacle at Manila Bay

Not many urban experiences can compare to watching the sun set in Manila Bay. Is Manila worth visiting for the perfect sunset photo? The Bay will give you a stunning spectacle.

• My Special Take: Dinner and a View. Head to the SM Mall of Asia (MOA), one of the largest malls in the world, located right up on the bay. Ensure you arrive at the Bay side of the mall just before 6:00 PM. Find a place to sit at a restaurant right by the water or join the throngs on the Baywalk and enjoy the beauty as the sky turns a picturesque gold, orange, and purple. It is a lovely, still moment of shared beauty.
  

Poblacion, Makati – The Bohemian Nightlife Centre

As the sun goes down, this peculiar part of Makati is the most authentic and vibrant nightlife on offer in the city. It consists of an old maze of houses and alleyways, but now it is home to the coolest bars, speakeasies, and supper clubs around.

• My favourite Take: A Speakeasy Crawl. This is the most fun spot to meet locals and expats alike. Find a secret door behind a taco stand into a bar with ambitious concepts and locally crafted cocktails made from “lambanog” (a coconut vodka). The vibe is casual, creative, and completely electrifying. Is Manila worth visiting if you are looking for exciting nightlife? Poblacion is a must.

• The cooler, drier months: December to February. This is arguably the best time to visit Manila. Check updates from the PAGASA for weather updates. 
• It can be scorching from March to May, and outdoor walking will be far less enjoyable. Planning around the weather is key to enjoying the city’s sights, as Manila’s beaches are not its focus.
   

Getting There

•  Steer clear of commute times (4:00-7:00 PM) at all costs! It is famously congested and can ruin a previously tightly packed itinerary.  Consider a guided city tour to manage logistics.

• A jeepney is a highly embellished, elongated WWII-era military vehicle and a vibrant cultural touchstone as well. Though its picturesque, complex routes are nearly impossible for a novice to navigate.

• The Philippines is one of the largest English-speaking countries in the world, and virtually every sign and staff member will speak and understand some English.

• A museum or mall may look inviting, but it normally always has AC blasting during the heat; be prepared with a light jacket for any indoor time.
  

My Picks for Modern Museums to Visit

The Dessert Museum: Sweet tooth alert! You will obviously be in a dream world. You literally jump into a sugary land in candy-coloured doughnuts and edible-themed rooms. Everything from doughnut rooms to marshmallow playgrounds to lily pad napping areas is waiting for you, and you get little treats along the way. Your eyes and camera are in for quite a treat, and the environment is whimsical and playful, which lends itself well to fun photographs. This is one of the most unique Manila tourist attractions.

• Art in Island: Not only is there museum art on the wall, but it is also the art on the floor – it is one of the largest 3D art museums in the world, which lets you be part of the painting! I wish I could say we whittled away our time in the 15 zones; we’re huge illusion fans, but we actually don’t remember how much time went by as we altered our long-planned cheesy Persian rug photos (pictures on a rug at a museum). My phone took dozens of photos in this photographer’s dream with amazing light and structural displays. Planning for sightseeing here is a must.
• The Mind Museum: If you love science and discovering new things or want to be a kid again, this is your spot! The Mind Museum is an extraordinary immersive experience while making science accessible and engaging with more than 250 hands-on exhibits and displays. The exhibits span 5 galleries (Atom, Earth, Life, Universe, and Technology). There are a few things to do in Manila that are engaging for all ages.

Manila isn’t easy — that’s part of its appeal. It’s a trial of patience, yes; a vibrant current of chaos, yes; but with patience you’ll find an unparalleled depth of spirit you won’t find anywhere else. Is Manila worth visiting?
